The 23 Things (Schedule)


Week 1 (1/9-1/15):

In Class Topics: Syllabus/course requirements, History of Libraries, Library web page tour, Intro to “The 23 things”, Intro to health topic assignment

Things to do by noon on 1/16:

1. Set up a blog and add first post. (3 points)
2. Haystac assignment. (3 points)
3. Take the self-guided library tour. (3 points)

Week 2 (1/16 - 1/22)

In-Class Topics: Organization of Info, Catalogs and LC Call Numbers, Subject Headings & Controlled Vocab, A bit about feeds and RSS

Things to do:

4. Choose your project for the class. (3 points)
5. Learn about RSS feeds and set up Google Reader account. (3 points)
6. Locate and subscribe to a few blogs or newsfeeds. (3 points)

Week 3 (1/23 - 1/29)

In-Class Topics: Background of WWW, Internet vs. Web, Google Searching

Things to do:

7. Learn about Web 2.0 and the future of information. (3 points)
8. Compare two search engines of your choice. (3 points)
9. Set up a del.icio.us account and learn about tagging. (3 points)

Week 4 (1/30 - 2/5)

In-Class Topics: Web searching wrap-up, evaluating web pages

Things to do:

10. Find 2 websites with background or statistical information about your topic. (3 points)
11. Explore Noodletools and create citations. (3 points)
12. Explore Flickr and learn how tags work with images. (3 points)

Week 5 (2/6 - 2/12)

In-Class Topics: Library web: Boolean Searching (Haystack & Acad Search Premier), Candy Day

Things to do:

13. Learn about wikis and take a look at some uses of them. (3 points)
14. Make an entry in the class wiki. (3 points)
15. Explore a couple of web-based applications. (3 points)

Week 6 (2/13 - 2/19)

In-Class Topics: Blast from the past: The wonderful world of books, Types of Books, Evaluating Books, The crystal ball of the future

Things to do:

16. Find 2 books with background or statistical information about your topic. (3 points)
17. Learn about podcasts & the search tools used to find them. (3 points)
18. Explore iTunes U or OpenCourseWare. (3 points)

Week 7 (2/20 - 2/26)

In-Class Topics: Finding Journal Literature,
Academic Search Premier, CINAHL, Citations

Things to do:

19. Find current information about your project topic. (3 points)
20. Explore a few award-winning Web 2.0 websites. (3 points)

Week 8 (2/27 - 3/5)

In-Class Topics: Intellectual Property, Citing Sources, In-class activity--What is plagiarism?

Things to do:

21. Final Project Part A--Complete narrative section of health info handout (10 points)
22. Create project References list and bring to next class (10 points)


Week 9 (3/6 - 3/12)

In-Class Topics: Project discussion, self-eval, other topics TBA, quiz prep

Things to do:

23 Prep for final quiz!

Week 10 (final class meeting, 3/13)

In-Class Activities: Final quiz, post test, course eval
